For my project presentation my plan is to introduce the concept of whole brain teaching and how the brain functions under the teaching methods of whole brain teaching. I will then present a video of some of the methods of whole brain teaching being implemented into a second grade classroom. Throughout the video I will provide commentary on what is being seen. After the video is time allows I will present a case study on how whole brain teaching affects student achievement.

Education reform is a constant focus in the United States due to the low scores on standardized tests. While many avenues of reform have been tried, Whole Brain Teaching has lasted through the past decade and is reaching its peak. This method of teaching incorporates the advances made in neuroscience in order to advance learning at all ages. Through the incorporation of neuroscience, lessons become more interactive and utilize both hemispheres of the brain. Students are more able to participate in the lesson being taught establishing better attention, and therefore, better retention of information. This teaching style employs both listening to a lesson, as well as mimicry and hand gestures. Whole brain teaching is best implemented through a seven step system which is engaging and keeps the students occupied so classroom management becomes easier. With an increase in implementation of this method into classrooms, student achievement will increase and behavior problems will decrease which helps to create the most successful learning environment for students.
I have started to put more focus on my project and am starting to work out the details that I will need in order to get in contact with teacher so that I can execute it. I have tried emailing a teacher who's video sparked my interest in whole brain teaching, but have not yet heard a response back. My next step in my capstone is to continue working out the details for my project and to start planning my research paper. In planning my paper I will find out any additional research that I will need. Overall, it is going well and getting organized is the most important thing for me right now so that I can move forward.
Topic: Whole Brain Teaching
Question: How will incorporating both hemispheres of a student's brain increase learning capabilities and classroom efficiency? Thesis: Incorporating both hemispheres is done through interactive lessons that use kinesthetic and stationary activities which create better attention and therefore better retention of information. By creating an environment in which students pay better attention the behaviors associated with disengagement are limited and the classroom functions more smoothly, I have continued to do research and have found a lot more research that will be very helpful for my project. One source, specifically, showed how implementing this technique in a classroom reduced behavior issues. With the information that I have found I don’t think that I will have to expand my topic like I previously thought. Through this new research I have been able to start composing a thesis. As of now my thesis is… Incorporating both hemispheres is done through interactive lessons that use kinesthetic and stationary activities which create better attention and therefore better retention of information. By creating an environment in which students pay better attention the behaviors associated with disengagement a limited and the classroom functions more smoothly. I have also made a lot of headway on my ideas for the final project. I think I would like to structure a lesson using whole brain teaching and then compare testing results from those students to students who did get taught using this method.
